A “human flesh search” (人肉搜索 rén ròu sōu suǒ) is when netizens gather online through BBS forums, social networks, chat room, or instant messaging to collaborate on a common task, such as finding information about a person.

Xiong Jiaqing, female, Sister Xiong, violent Xiong, student of Hongkou district’s Nanhu Vocational School, No. 2 Branch campus. On October 23, the “Shanghai XuHui District girl fight, watch and be angry” video spread on the internet, a single girl standing in the middle of an alley, while another girl charges from behind with a flying kick to her lower back, and when the first girl is on the ground, the second girl uses her foot to stomp on the other’s stomach…. Human flesh searched by netizens, the attacker turns out to be Xiong Jiaqing. This name has sparked heated discussion on Shanghai’s well-known BBS discussion forums, with everyone one after another expressing anger against the girl who did the beating.

October 23 evening, netizens were sharing a video about Shanghai girls fighting on a certain video website, about 5 minutes and 20 seconds long. The video shows, within an alley, a girl wearing a purple t-shirt and looks like a middle-school student beats up another girl. The bystanders in the video repeatedly speak to each other in Shanghainese, and refer to the attacker as “Sister Xiong”.

In the video, “Sister Xiong” continuously slaps the other girl’s face, pull her hair, and charges from behind to slam into the girl…during this time, one person even lights a cigarette for “Sister Xiong”, even says “just a little is enough, no need to go too far”.  The victim from beginning to end does not fight back, allowing “Sister Xiong” to hit and yell at her.

This video sparked intense discussion amongst netizens, with everyone one after another criticizing “Sister Xiong” as too violent. “Truly without proper upbringing”, “Why are children these days like this?”, “Why didn’t they call the police”…many netizens expressed sympathy for the girl who was beaten. One netizen analyzes: “Young, don’t think, like to be the center of attention, emulating Young and Dangerous, thinking being feared means having face, it is very easy for these thinking patterns to be magnified in situations with a lot of people, and with a group of people provoking, encouraging you to do certain things, irrational behaviors happen.” He believes the girl who was beaten can accuse/sue “Sister Xiong” for intentional injury crime.

Xiong Jiaqing’s reasons for the beating: The girl who was beaten stole Xiong Jiaqing’s boyfriend, so Xiong Jiaqing was taking revenge.

From the internet, I read an article and saw many black and white photographs, and could not help but think of that Project Hope big-eyed little girl [pictured above].

Su Mingjuan was the Project Hope big-eyed little girl, and though today she has already grown up, she was originally the child of an ordinary peasant family in an Anhui mountain village, her family poor ever since she was little, parents depending on farming to survive. A Chinese cargo ship (”德新海 De Xin Hai”) with twenty-five Chinese seamen was seized by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean about 700 miles east of the Somali coastline. Headlines in Chinese news websites except Xinhuanet are all about this incident (Sina, NetEase, Mop, Huanqiu, Sohu, Tom, QQ. )

QINGDAO, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) — A Chinese company confirmed Tuesday that 25 Chinese crewmembers were being held hostage by pirates in the Indian Ocean.

The bulk carrier De Xin Hai and its 25 crew were hijacked in the Indian Ocean around noon local time Monday.

“We received a report from the cargo ship at 3:50 p.m. (Beijing Time) Monday, saying that armed pirates were aboard the ship, and then we lost touch,” a spokesman for the vessel’s owner, Qingdao Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd., told Xinhua Tuesday.

The company, based in eastern Shandong Province, immediately reported the incident to the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center, he said.

“All of the 25 crew were employed by our company, and we have notified their relatives about the incident,” he said.

Twenty-two of the crew were from Shandong and the other three were from Liaoning, Hebei and Jiangsu provinces.

“We are closely working with the authorities to release the ship and crew,” he said.

Crew on a Chinese cargo ship defeated pirates last year with Molotov cocktails and a water cannon but this time people on “De Xin Hai” were not so lucky. Fortunately, the crew hasn’t been hurt so far.

LONDON, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) — Spokesman of the European Union (EU)naval force John Harbour confirmed on Monday that 25 Chinese people were taken hostages by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean and they seem to be fine.

Harbour said “the total number held hostages along Somali coast is 146. I can confirm on board the carrier, there are 25 Chinese personnel.”

He said: “I know that the UK Maritime Trade Office has spoken to the owner of the ship, to confirm the figure and they are trying to get in touch with the pirates, at the moment to see what their next intentions are. As far as I am aware the ship is heading to the northwest, which would be towards the Somali coast.”

Harbour said they send a helicopter to investigate the event. It has detected the bulk carrier and has taken photographs that “there were a number of other people seeing on the dock, and these were clearly crew and they seem to be fine.”

A bulk carrier “De Xin Hai” from China was hijacked in the Indian Ocean around noon local time, the EU anti-piracy military organization EU NAVFOR said in a statement on Monday.

EU NAVFOE said in a statement that the ship was hijacked 550 nautical miles North East of the Seychelles and 700 nautical miles off the East coast of Somalia.

“On indication of an attack an EU NAVFOR Maritime Patrol Aircraft, operating from the Seychelles was launched to investigate the incident,” the statement said.

The aircraft located the ship and has reported that there are four pirates visible and 2 small pirate craft being towed by the ship.

The statement also said that the bulk carrier was not registered with the Maritime Security Center Horn of Africa.

There were three PLA naval ships patrolling in the region and the nearest one was 1080 nautical miles away from the hijacked Chinese ship. The position of the ship has been identified and Chinese government vows to save the crew. However, details on how the crew will be rescued haven’t been disclosed, in order to protect their safety. But given China’s track record it could just be another “white elephant” used to attract attention.

Recently, a British drug smuggler’s death sentence was upheld by the Supreme People’s Court in China. News on Xinhuanet.com:

Death penalty on British drug dealer in line with Chinese law: spokesman

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) — Chinese court’s sentence of death penalty on a British drug trafficker is in line with Chinese laws, said a spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

Akmal Shaikh, 53, male, was sentenced to death in the first instance trial by the Intermediate People’s Court of Urumqi Municipality in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Oct. 29, 2008, said Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at a regular news briefing.

The case is currently being reviewed by China’s Supreme People’s Court, Ma said.

“All the procedures have been in line with relevant Chinese laws. During the trial, The accused and the counsel had freely exercised their rights of defense, and translation service had been provided to the accused. His legal rights had been fully guaranteed,” he said.

According to Ma, the British embassy in China and a British organization had proposed to organize mental disease examinations on Akmal Shaikh, while offering no evidence that he may be suffering from mental disease.

The accused had said that he and his family members had no history of mental diseases, Ma said.

The case is under examination, he said.

The Russian Federation’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is currently visiting Beijing and signing contracts with Chinese companies. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov told Reuters last Friday that the two countries will make deals worth $5.5 billion in thirty-eight areas, including the financial industry, telecommunications, mineral extraction, natural gas, nuclear energy, oil refinement, electric power, transportation and infrastructure. Some highlights of the deals are:

1. “Sistema will sign a $200 million funding deal with the Bank of China and telecoms equipment maker ZTE Corp.” (Reuters)
2. “China National Materials (Sinoma) and investment holding company CNBM will sign four cement production facilities construction deals with Russian cement maker Eurocement.” (Reuters)
3. Establishing a mechanism between the two countries on mutual acknowledgment of Ballistic Missile launching.
4. A joint petroleum refinery plant in Tianjing which has 15-million-tons-per-year production capability. A petroleum pipeline between the two country had already been finished in May this year.
5. It also includes a memorandum of China helping Russia building its high speed railway systems. The railway between Vladivostock and Khabarovsk will probably use Chinese technologies. Experts say China’s technical advantages in High Speed Trail over Japan and France are 1) China provides a comprehensive engineering solution from infrastructure construction (工务工程?), railway communication system, power grid laying to train construction while no other country can provide. 2) China’s railway engineers have better technological experiences on upgrading old railway systems 3) Chinese construction companies are able to build systems on a tight budget, usually about 20% lower than some other countries. The railway between the two cities will cost from billions to tens of billions USD.

Prime Minister Putin will also attend the Eighth Ministers’ Meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Few in China knew the private company Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery (STHIM) until it released a deal to buy Hummer from American General Motors in June. STHIM became the center of the spotlight since then in China.

Some background knowledge about Hummer: the civilian off-road vehicle was derived from the military M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (Humvee) by AM General. The model was criticized by many mainly for its poor fuel economy. Due to the soaring price of crude oil, the sale of Hummer dropped from ~82k in 2005 to ~500 in the first five months of this year. Hummer is not the American military’s Humvee and China does not lack military multipurpose vehicle technology since Dongfeng Mengshi developed the People’s Liberation Army’s HMMWV in 2002, which became active in service in 2006.

According to the contract, Tengzhong will only obtain ownership of the brand while keeping the management and factory in US to save about 3000 jobs. The transaction hasn’t been approved by both Chinese and US regulatory agencies and many believe that the bid will probably be blocked by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC, a Chinese government agency). The Peace Prize is given to the future Obama, not the present Obama, but in giving it to him now, Obama now has an invisible pressure, and only with pressure will there be force/motion. This is the intention of this prize!
I must say, this awarding is very wise, and the brains in this group of judges truly were not wasted.
Compared to the group of shit brains we have here, it really doesn’t seem like we are from the same planet!
